Referee Seminar Success

Senior match officials from across Merseyside joined Liverpool County FA for a seminar specifically catering for referees aged 45 and above on Sunday 16 July, held at the County FA’s Walton Hall Park headquarters.

Serving up a series of entertaining and thought-provoking sessions, the seminar provided an insight to various areas of officiating which allowed those in attendance to assess their own preparation and performance.

A fitness and nutrition session, delivered by former PGMOL sport scientist Phil Hewitt, gave participants an opportunity to develop their routines both pre and post-match. The session was one of the highlights of the day, undeniably delivering valuable information that will enhance senior officials on the pitch and in their respective everyday lives.

Liverpool County FA Referee Development Officer, Dave Horlick, also used the seminar to review law amendments heading into the 2017/18 season, reviewing video clip to enable the group to discuss careless, reckless and excessive challenges. Whilst football provides differing opinions on the pitch, the group unanimously agreed to unite and clamp down on serious foul play challenged and using ‘Law 18’ common sense where the game allows.

Further information was provided to referees by County FA Football Services Officer, Inga Jemison, who spoke to delegates regarding the use of the online Whole Game System and how it can benefit officials. Whilst the system is seeing its use grow by officials and clubs, stats have shown that more senior participants are failing to use Whole Game to its full potential.

Local official Ian Hussin provided a demonstration of how a discipline report could be submitted in five minutes using Whole Game System, resulting in a positive reception among delegates who felt confident about using the system in future.

A question-and-answer session concluded the seminar, which delivered three hours of useful knowledge that senior officials will now be able to put into practice.
