Widnes Prepared For Prescot Cables in Semi-Final

by James Houghton
Widnes Football Club take on Prescot Cables in the semi-final of the Liverpool Senior Cup on 19 March 2019.

As we come to the end of our series on the final four of the Liverpool Senior Cup, our attention turns to Widnes Football Club.

The Whites travel to Prescot Cables tonight (Tuesday 19 March) as they hope to secure a place in the Senior Cup Final.

Every team dreams of making it to cup finals but for joint manager Kevin ‘Kev’ Towey tonight’s clash is an opportunity for him to make it to the Liverpool Senior Cup Final for the first time in his career.

Towey told the Liverpool County FA how much it would mean to him saying: “I’ve never actually got to the final and I know Steven Akrigg who’s the joint manager with me has won it with Southport if I remember rightly.

“So, he has obviously got greater memories than me with regards to winning the competition.

“But to get to the final would be a massive achievement personally for me and Ste, as young managers.”

Widnes beat a young Everton side in the last round to secure a historic win for the Whites and Towey highlights that as the biggest moment of their cup run this season: “We played City of Liverpool who were flying in their league and they posed a very difficult test.

“We overcame them and then a very youthful Everton side came in the quarter-finals and you could see why they’re full-time players and to beat the name Everton, regardless of what side, that they send was quite historic for this club.

“It is massive for some of the younger lads.

“Back when I was at Skelmersdale United we had some good senior cup runs and we played the likes of Everton, we actually played Everton twice and it was always a big occasion and it bodes well for the young boys in the team that they can go out there and hold their own with teams like Everton.”

Widnes crashed out of the competition at this stage last year after a tight game with Towey’s former team Marine and that loss along with their current league position has lit a flame underneath the pair to get their hands on a piece of silverware with Towey saying: “It means an awful lot since Ste and I have been in charge last year we had a good run.

“We were narrowly beaten by Marine in the semi-final and we gave a lot on the night and we were really unlucky not to progress, so to get to this stage again is great for the club.

“Also, with our current league situation, with us lying in mid-table, it is a big part of something that we can win this year.

“The board of our club, the players and the fans; they love the Senior Cup.

“We as managers love the Senior Cup because it is prestigious although the bigger sides like Everton send more youthful sides now, to have your name next to them sort of clubs on the honours list would again be quite an achievement for this football club.”

Both Widnes and Prescot Cables currently play in the Evo-Stik West Division meaning this will be the second time these two teams have played with Widnes winning the first meeting 2-1 but Towey knows that if they can repeat the scoreline tonight then they will be in for a tough challenge in Southport: “Southport have not been taking things lightly at all.

“They are involved in another county cup and they are in the final of that one as well, so you know with regards to respecting the competition Southport are doing that in its entirety, so it won’t be easy.

“We beat Southport 5-1 on the run to last year’s semi-final, but it was a mix of youth team players and players coming back from injury, whereas Liam this season seems to be fielding very strong sides so regardless of who progresses, hopefully it is us, it won’t be an easy final.”

Widnes travel to Volair Park, home of Prescot Cables, in the Liverpool Senior Cup semi-final on Tuesday 19 March. Kick off 7.45pm. We wish both sides the best of luck.
