Reds Legends Get Involved in Walking Football Tournament

Liverpool County FA, in partnership with Red Neighbours and Liverpool Football Club, presented players within the region with a great opportunity...
However, those involved were given more than they bargained for, as Liverpool Football Club favourites Robbie Fowler, Gary McAllister and Alan Kennedy got involved, representing the club legends’ Walking Football team on the day.

Organised to provide players aged 50 and over with a chance to get active and socialise through football, Walking Football is a five-a-side game where running is deemed a foul and a free-kick awarded to the opposition if committed.

The Walking Football tournament had eight teams involved, with matches played in great spirits to highlight the friendly nature of the game. Teams from Wigan travelled to Merseyside for the competition, with the Liverpool Legends team and local Walking Football teams also involved.

Stuart Carrington, Football Development Officer at Liverpool County FA, said: “We have worked in partnership with Red Neighbours and Liverpool Football Club to set up Walking Football sessions at Anfield Sports Centre twice a week – and it has been a fantastic experience for our mature players.

“Bill Bygroves, Liverpool Football Club’s Head of Community, has done a fantastic job, along with Christine Mounsey and the staff at Anfield Sports Centre, in engaging with teams from across Liverpool and Wigan to come together and play in this friendly tournament.

“It was terrific that Liverpool Football Club invited legends in Robbie Fowler, Gary McAllister and Alan Kennedy to take part too. It was a great day of football, enjoyed by all, and a really nice gesture as Christmas gifts were handed out to each player from Liverpool Football Club, presented by the three of the legends in attendance.”
