Merseyside Team Participates in Vikings Futsal Cup

Incredible experience for Liverbird Futsal Club.

Merseyside-based Liverbird Futsal Club have just returned from the experience of a lifetime, after participating in the 2019 Viking Futsal Cup, which is hosted on Paris, France.

Over the course of five days, players representing the club played in two competitions over 25 and 26 May 2019.

The first competition saw Liverbird take on local teams that play in the area’s Futsal league, which provided the club to hand game time to development players and some of the side’s under-18s. Throughout the competition, Liverbirds’ quality was clear for all to see, as the girls won every game without conceding a single goal.

The main event, however, was a different proposition for the team. With strong teams representing clubs in France and Germany, the players immediately realised the step-up in competition. Having lost their opening game to the French University champions, Reins, 4-0, the speed and intensity of the match provided a learning curve.

Immediately realising that focus and improvement was needed in order to compete following a tough first day, a place in the final was still possible for Liverbird – provided that they didn’t lose a single game on day two.

During an impressive second day’s play, Liverbird showcased the group’s potential by reaching the final, where they suffered defeat to Reins once more – this time via a penalty shoot-out.

Gareth Etchells, team coach of Liverbird Futsal Club, said: “The girls did themselves proud and continue to promote the game, not only within Liverpool by throughout Europe. This particular tour followed on from previous trips to Poland and the Netherlands.”

Well done to everybody at Liverbird Futsal Club from the team at Liverpool County FA.
