ReFuture will support people living across Merseyside to become referees.
We recognise the profound impact the pandemic has had on many people living in Merseyside and so this project is being established to encourage people to get back on their feet and explore opportunities as a grassroots referee.
What is ReFuture?
As a Referee you will learn many life skills that are directly transferable into a work environment; communication, making decisions under pressure, risk assessment, leadership, confidence, teamwork amongst many others. The ReFuture project has been established to help people develop the skills highlighted above and act as a catalyst for wider opportunities, both personally and professionally.
Importantly, ReFuture will provide the successful applicants with the opportunity to develop themselves and boost their self-confidence following the pandemic.
Who is ReFuture targeted at?
Local and national research shows that those from Low Socio-Economic Groups (LSEG) have been amongst the worst affected by the pandemic. The ReFuture project will therefore focus on traditionally under-represented groups and offer funding towards completion of The FA’s Referee Course.
Priority places and funding will be given to those people who meet the following criteria;
- Living in a low socio-economic area.
- Being from a minority ethnic background.
- Being Female.
- Living with a long-term health condition.
- Over 21 years old.
How do I apply?

Applications will close on Wednesday 5 January 2022 and all individuals will be contacted shortly after the closing date to inform them whether they have been successful gaining funding for the course. If there is remaining funding available, we will reopen the funding to further applications.
Upon completion of the course, newly qualified referees will be required to complete a number of fixtures with Liverpool FA Sanctioned Leagues in return for payment of their course.
