Liverpool Homeless Football Club and Liverpool County FA have once again teamed up with Worst Kept Secret to bring together the fifth annual Women Against Domestic Abuse Cup.


Held on Tuesday 19 June at Powerleague Liverpool, the Women Against Domestic Abuse Cup is a five-a-side football competition for women’s teams of all backgrounds. 

The focus of the day is to raise awareness around domestic abuse, with stalls on display offering support and advice on various issues, in addition to hair and beauty; whilst a range of food will be available to all in attendance.

Every participant involved will receive a medal.

Football is to be played in two groups – those who play regularly in one, and those who have not played for a while or never played at all in the other. Whilst the tone of the day is a serious one, there is a focus on enjoying the company of other players and getting active.

Anna Farrell, Football Development Officer at Liverpool County FA, said: We want to show women the positive side of football; how it involves teamwork, improves fitness levels, the social benefits and how fun it can be. This year, the cup welcomes females from various backgrounds to come together, make new friends, have fun and say NO to domestic abuse. We’re extremely proud to be involved.”

John Finnegan, CEO of Liverpool Homeless Football Club, added: “Domestic abuse is not just physical. It is often unseen and unheard, so it is important to raise awareness of this and ensure people know that they have somewhere they can contact for support. The day will have a fun element, but a very serious message will be delivered on the day.”

A spokesperson for Worst Kept Secret said: “Domestic violence does not discriminate, as anyone – regardless of race, ethnic or religious group, class, disability or lifestyle can experience domestic abuse. It can occur in all forms of relationships, including heterosexual, lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender relationships. As domestic violence seems to still be a taboo subject, Worst Kept Secret have decided to join the Liverpool County FA and Liverpool Homeless Football Club, in order to help raise awareness and help those who might be suffering to know that they are not alone and that there is support out there for them.”

Worst Kept Secret offers a confidential helpline, which is free and does not show up on landline bills. As a service, it offers support for anyone who is or has experienced domestic abuse, which it is able to do through providing a comforting and understanding listening ear.
