Stadium Secure Narrow Sunday Junior Cup Victory

by Bronnie Jones

Stadium beat Western Approaches 1-0 to become the Liverpool County FA Sunday Junior Cup winners on Thursday 26 April.

B Smith provided the game’s solitary goal that secured victory.

Western started the game off well and kept the most possession throughout the first half.

After just six minutes they had a corner kick and the cross was knocked back by Stadium for another. This time when the cross was looped in it looked to be going into the net, but the Stadium goalkeeper punched it away to safety.

Western looked threatening again 12 minutes in. They were on the offence, but B Smith took a player down and Western were awarded a free kick. The position wasn’t far from goal and could’ve been the perfect opportunity to go ahead. But, the attempt was kicked straight at the Stadium wall.

As the first half came to an end it was still 0-0, with both teams defending well having kept their focus.

Three minutes into the second half, the large crowd finally saw a goal!

After some play in the box from the Stadium attackers, the ball was kicked out and fell to B Smith who was around 30 yards out. He hit a fantastic strike that landed right into the top corner of the net to make it 1-0.

As the clock ran down, Western were trying their best to break the Stadium defence but it was proving too difficult.

Their closest chance came on 80 minutes as Ryan McKenna took a shot from a tight angle, but the ball was cleared off the goal line.

There was some late controversy after one of the Western players went down in the box in the last minute of the game. The trailing team appealed for a penalty; however the referee dismissed the claim.

The whistle then soon blew for the end of the game and Stadium were crowned cup winners.
